Marketing Update: Google Unveils +1
July
1, 2011 – Google has released a new search related feature named +1
that enables Google account holders to make search recommendations
to their Google contacts. Full use of this feature requires a Google
account, which can be used for other Google services, such as
G-mail, Google Reader and Google Buzz.

+1 is comparable to the “Like” button on Facebook.
When signed-in to a Google account with a public profile, anytime a
search is conducted, a +1 button appears next to each search result
and pay-per-click (PPC) advertisement. Clicking the +1 button will
let the account holder’s Google contacts aware of this
recommendation when they make a similar search. Google may also use
+1 recommendations from a Google account holder’s contacts when
ranking search results. +1 then becomes one of the many factors in
the Google search algorithm that determines search rankings. Google
has determined this will be beneficial to users by influencing their
search results according to recommendations by their social
connections and contacts.
+1 will play a key role in Google’s soon to be released social
platform, Google+. Google+ will provide a personal dashboard where
each of a user’s contacts and their +1’s will be displayed. Google+
is still in its testing stage with an unknown release date.
- This new feature has no negative impact on current
search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.
- Google PPC ad positioning is not affected at this time.
- As +1 usage grows, it will be used to socially integrate
additional Google services.
